What is Audiology?

Audiology is a branch of health science that studies hearing, balance, and related disorders.

Audiologists are healthcare professionals who treat those with hearing loss and proactively prevent related damage. By employing various testing strategies, audiologists aim to determine whether someone has normal sensitivity to sounds. 

Where to study Audiology in South Africa 

There are a number of tertiary institutions where you can study Audiology, but keep in mind that each institution will have its own admission criteria.

Generally, Audiologists have completed a Master’s degree in their field and have sufficient computer literacy skills, needed to generate digital reports and perform other duties.

Bursaries available for Audiology in South Africa 

Exxaro Bursary 

Exxaro Resources Limited is a big South African heavy minerals and coal mining company, with offices and operating facilities across Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia. 

Exxaro is inviting students to apply for their 3 types of bursary programmes:

1) Social Scheme bursaries: for students residing in communities where Exxaro operates, for studies within the following high demand occupations:

  • Medicine, Optometry, Audiology & Nursing
  • Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Computer Science, Data Sciences and Information Technology
  • Social Work & Psychology
  • Education (Teaching English, Mathematics & Science & Early Childhood Development)
  • Occupational & Speech Therapy
  • Sports Management & Biokinetics

2) Feeder Scheme bursaries: for undergraduate studies within the following core mining industry disciplines:

  • Geology
  • Electrical Engineering (BEng)
  • Industrial Engineering (BEng)
  • Mechanical/ Mechatronic Engineering (BEng)
  • Metallurgical Engineering (BEng)
  • Mining Engineering (BSc)
  • Mine Surveying / MRM

3) Students living with disabilities bursaries: for students residing in communities where Exxaro operates, who are living with a disability. The bursary covers all fields of study.

Eligibility requirements (for Audiology/Social Scheme bursaries) include: 

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must reside within a community where Exxaro operates (Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the surrounding areas)
  • You must be studying full-time, towards a minimum 3 year undergraduate degree in one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must be studying at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

Gauteng Department of Health Bursary 

The bursary scheme was initiated by the Department of Health as a way to increase the skill set within the medical field in South Africa, which is currently a scarce skills in the country.

Bursaries will be awarded within the following fields of study:

1. Students currently studying at a University/ University of Technology:

  • Speech therapy, Language, Audiology & Pathology
  • Medical Physicists
  • Physiotherapy
  • B Pharmacy
  • Dentistry
  • MA Clinical Psychology
  • MBChB
  • Occupational Therapy

2. Students currently in Matric and have been accepted to study at a University/ University of Technology in the upcoming year:

  • Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice
  • Clinical Engineering
  • Clinical Technology
  • Dental Technology
  • Dental Therapy
  • Diagnostic Radiography
  • Dietetics
  • Emergency Medical Care
  • Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics
  • Optometry Radiotherapy
  • Oral Hygiene

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be residing in Gauteng Province permanently
  • Must come from a disadvantaged background
  • Must be studying or intend on studying in one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Must have a minimum “C” symbol average in Matric

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health Bursary 

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is a Department within the government of South Africa and will be awarding bursaries within the following Health Science fields of study:

  • Audiology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Dentistry
  • Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Optometry
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiography (Ultrasonography)
  • Speech Therapy

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must reside in the KwaZulu-Natal province
  • Must have completed Matric or currently be in Matric
  • Must be studying or applied to study within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Must be have a proven financial need

North West Provincial Government Bursary 

The North West Provincial Government is one of the Departments within the South African government. The North West Provincial Government Office of the Premier is inviting students to apply for the Victor Thebe Sifora Provincial Bursary Scheme. 

Bursaries will be awarded to students residing within the North West province, for studies in a number of fields, but specifically:

Department of Health

  • Audiology
  • B Pharm
  • Dentistry
  • Dietetics (BSc)
  • Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics
  • Medicine
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Speech Therapy

Eligibility requirements include:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must reside within the North West province
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • You must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards an undergraduate qualification in one of the fields listed above, in 2023
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at a recognized and accredited public tertiary institution in South Africa (studies at private institutions will only be funded in exceptional cases to address the skills need of the province)
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • Preference will be given to students in financial need 

NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides the DHET bursary which covers first undergraduate courses in any field of study, done at a public institution. This means that audiology courses will also be covered.

The NSFAS requirements are as follows:

  • South African citizen
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Registered or applying to study at a public institution in South Africa
