To address the missing middle crisis, the Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) was established to provide funding to students who aren't financially capable by themselves to access higher education. Now, 2025 ISFAP bursary applications are now open.
2025 ISFAP applications will close on 31 October.
Who qualifies for ISFAP funding?
ISFAP bursaries are offered to South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are passionate about fields with high job demand.
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) releases a yearly National List of Occupations in High Demand (OIHD). These careers offer strong growth, competitive salaries, and plenty of job openings.
This list informs the courses which ISFAP funds. ISFAP tailors its bursaries to both industry needs and donor preferences. You can find a current list of funded courses on the ISFAP website.
We have a new list released in February...containing our 2024 list of occupations in high demand.
Biyela went on to explain, "we are also very funder or donor-driven in terms of specifics and requirements so it's also largely dependent on the requirements that we receive from our funders in terms of the courses that we end up funding".
To qualify for an ISFAP bursary, you must be:
- A South African citizen
- Enrolled or planning to enroll at an ISFAP partner university in a funded program
- Able to provide a stamped indemnity form and certified ID copies
