The SETAs are South Africa's Sector Education and Training Authorities, and there are currently 21 of them.
There is a SETA for every sector of the economy, that focuses on boosting the skills sets and abilities needed in that particular area through practical workplace training.
Because each sector is different, there are also different eligibility requirements for each one. Here is a list of how to apply for a few:
Agricultural SETA Bursary
The Agriculture SETA (also known as AgriSETA) is responsible for the development of the Agricultural sector's workforce skills, education and overall development. This SETA offers funding for tertiary education through grants and bursaries.
The bursary is open to anyone studying towards an Agriculture-related qualification, undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
How to apply for the Agricultural SETA Bursary
Applications can be submitted in either of the following ways:
- Online on the AgriSETA website; applicants will first be required to complete the Online Discretionary grant application.
- Download and complete the AgriSETA Bursary Application Form
Eligibility requirements for the AgriSETA Bursary
- You must be studying towards an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Agricultural related qualification (Degree, Diploma or Certificate)
- You must be studying full-time or part-time (short courses will NOT be funded)
- You must be studying at a recognised and accredited College, University or University of Technology in South Africa
- You must be unemployed
- You must NOT be in receipt of funding from any other source
- Preference will be given to students pursuing studies on the AgriSETA Sectoral Priority Occupations (PIVOTAL) List
Services SETA Bursary
The Services SETA bursary is offered to both unemployed and employed individuals that are studying towards a qualification in the service sector. The bursary is administered and regulated through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the services of SETA and the institution of further or higher education learning.
How to apply for the Services SETA Bursary:
Applications must be done online, by registering on the Services SETA website. Once you have registered, you may login and proceed with your application.
The courses/fields of study that the Services SETA bursary funds includes:
- Human Resources
- Marketing
- Entrepreneurship and or SMME development
- Media & Communications
- Project Management
- Waste Management Cleaning
- Dermatology & related
- Cosmetic developments
- Real Estate & Property Development
- Business Management /Administration
- Economics
- Social Sciences
Eligibility requirements for the Services SETA Bursary
If unemployed, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old
- Must be currently unemployed
- Must intend on studying towards a NQF level 5 qualification (or above) within one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Must be studying full time at a public tertiary institute (University/ University of Technology/ TVET College) in South Africa
- Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 50%
- Must have a total household income of less than R600 000 per annum
If employed, must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be currently employed
- Must be studying towards a NQF level 5 qualification (or above) within one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Must be studying full time or part time at a public tertiary institute (University/ University of Technology/ TVET College) in South Africa
- Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 50%
- Must have a total household income of less than R600 000 per annum
Health and Welfare SETA Bursary
Health and Welfare SETA (also known as HWSETA) is committed to the development and provision of skilled workers in the health and social development field, to provide top quality services.
There will be two bursaries awarded for undergraduate studies, in the following fields of study:
- Health Science
- Social Science
- Veterinary Science
How to apply for the HWSETA Bursary
Applications must be done online on the HWSETA website.
After completing the online application (which pre-qualifies candidates), students will then be required to submit a 1 minute motivational video, explaining why they should be awarded the bursary.

Eligibility requirements for the HWSETA Bursary
- You must be a South African citizen and resident
- You must have a valid South African ID Card or ID Book
- You must have completed Matric or be currently in Matric
- You must be studying or applied to study towards one of the aforementioned undergraduate degrees
- You must be studying or applied to study at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa
- You must pass all your subjects or modules for the current year of study
- You must be doing Mathematics and Science as subjects in Matric, if currently in Matric
- You must have passed Matric exemption with Mathematics and Science, if completed Matric
- You must meet the entry requirements set by HWSETA and the tertiary institution
- You must NOT be a staff member of HWSETA or a related agency or promotional partner of HWSETA
- You must NOT be in receipt of any other bursary funding
Education, Training and Development Practices SETA Bursary
The Education, Training and Development Practices SETA (also known as ETDP SETA) promotes the development and improvement of the skills profile of the education, training and development sector.
Students who want to pursue a career in the education sphere have the option of applying for an ETDP bursary to fund their studies.
The ETDP SETA Bursary funds the following qualifications in education.
- National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE)
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
- Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) in Mathematics and Science
- B. Ed Foundation Phase, an Advanced Certificate in Education/Teaching (Ace) in Leadership and Management
- Certificate in Education
How to apply for the EDTP SETA Bursary
Applications are done online on the ETDP SETA website.
Eligibility requirements for the EDTP SETA Bursary
- Applicant must be academically eligible
- Applicant must be studying towards an approved degree or PGCE in the areas that the bursary covers
- Applicant must express commitment to a teaching career, meaning that they must be interested in working with the young, and be enthusiastic about a career in teaching
- Applicant must be willing to teach at any school that they may be governmentally appointed to once they have completed their studies
- It must be noted that students from disadvantaged backgrounds or rural areas, and applicants who are willing to teach in rural communities, will be given first priority for the bursary
