With an impressive pass rate of 87.3%, the highest in recent years, the Matric Class of 2024 has set a new benchmark for academic excellence. However, for those who may not be satisfied with their results or want to explore ways to improve, there are several options available, including re-marks, re-checks, and rewrites.

The 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams began on Monday, 21 October, and concluded on 28 November. Over 840,000 candidates from public schools across South Africa sat for the exams in 150 subjects.

Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, proudly announced that the class of 2024 achieved a remarkable pass rate of 87.3%, showing a 4.4% improvement from last year’s pass rate of 82.9%.

Matric results were officially released on the morning of 14 January 2025.

Matric Re-marks and Re-checks

If you are not satisfied with your results or suspect an error in your marks, you have the option to apply for a re-check or re-mark. The cost for a re-mark is R120 per paper, and R30 per paper for a recheck. Applications for these services must be submitted by 21 January 2025.

How to Apply for a Matric Re-mark/Re-check

You can obtain application forms at the centre where you wrote your exam, or apply online by following these steps:

  1. Visit the Government’s Official e-Services Portal.
  2. Click on the education icon (graduation cap).
  3. Select the 'Basic Education' option, which will display several options.
  4. Choose 'Re-Mark/Recheck'.
  5. Complete the online application form and ensure all details are correct.
  6. Accept the terms and conditions by ticking the designated box (√).

Before submitting your online application, make sure to make the payment for the re-mark or re-check. Use your exam number as the reference when making the payment.

If you’re still dissatisfied with the results after a re-mark or re-check, you may request to view your exam script for a fee of R230. Be sure to apply within 7 days of receiving the re-mark results.

Re-mark Results and Collection

Re-mark results will be released on 7 March 2025. You can collect them from the same school or exam centre where you wrote your exams.

Matric Rewrite: A Second Chance to Improve

If you're considering improving your matric results, the May/June 2025 matric rewrite is your chance. Applications open immediately after the release of your matric results and close on 7 February 2025.
