Umalusi, South Africa’s Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, provides a straightforward process for obtaining a replacement matric certificate.

Steps to Apply for a Replacement Certificate

Step 1: Create an Account
Begin by registering an account on the Umalusi portal. This account will help you track and manage your application efficiently.

Step 2: Submit Your Application
Log in to your account and submit a request for the replacement certificate. Specify the qualification type, such as:

  • National Senior Certificate
  • Senior Certificate
  • National Certificate (N3)
  • National Certificate Vocational
  • Amended Senior Certificate
  • ABET Level 4
  • General and Further Education Certificate

Required Documents

To complete your application, ensure you have:

  • Affidavit: A signed affidavit from a police station explaining the status of your original certificate (e.g., stolen, lost, or damaged).
  • Certified Copy of ID: A certified copy of your identity document, verified by a commissioner of oaths.
  • Delivery Method: Choose between collecting the certificate from Umalusi’s Pretoria office or opting for a courier service (additional fees apply).

Step 3: Receive Your Certificate
Certificates can either be collected in person or delivered via courier. Umalusi advises that processing times range from one to six weeks, depending on the circumstances.

Special Cases for Older Certificates

For certificates issued before November 1992, applications must be submitted through the relevant Department of Education. These requests follow a similar process, but the certificate will be printed by the appropriate assessment body. Processing typically takes one to three weeks.

Important Notes

Once a replacement certificate is issued, the original certificate becomes invalid. If the original is later recovered, it cannot be used.

For a seamless process, ensure all documents are accurate and submitted promptly. With these steps, replacing your matric certificate is manageable and efficient.
