The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has recently revealed the university allowance amounts for September 2024. This crucial announcement brings clarity to students enrolled in accredited programs at South African public universities and TVET colleges.

NSFAS provides comprehensive financial aid, including bursaries and student loans, to deserving students. This support enables them to pursue higher education without the burden of excessive financial strain.

University NSFAS Allowance Amounts

  • Living Allowance: University students will receive an annual living allowance of R16,500. This amount is further divided into:
    • R3,045 for personal care
    • R13,455 for meals
  • Learning Material Allowance: Up to R5,460 is allocated for learning materials.
  • Accommodation and Travel:
    • Students residing with immediate family or relatives are not eligible for the accommodation allowance. Instead, they receive a travel allowance determined by their university, with a maximum of R7,875 for 2024.
  • Students with Disabilities: Special provisions are in place for students with disabilities, who receive higher living allowances and an additional learning materials allowance.

Direct Payments from Universities

A significant change for the 2024 academic year is the direct payment of student allowances by universities. This means that students enrolled in one of South Africa's 26 public universities will receive their allowances directly from their respective institutions.
