The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has closed applications for 2025 funding, having received a total of 907,968 applications, including both bursaries and loans. The application period opened on 21 September and concluded on 15 December.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges.
Missing Documents Hinder NSFAS Funding Decisions
Despite the high volume of applications, NSFAS is facing delays due to missing documents.
According to spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi, the most common missing document is the declaration form.
These documents are crucial for us to make funding decisions and finalise applications before the year's end
600,000 Students Approved, 120,000 Awaiting Documentation
NSFAS has already approved funding for approximately 600,000 students. However, 120,000 students still require outstanding documents to complete their applications.
Students have 30 days from receiving a notification to submit the necessary documents. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of their NSFAS application.
Check Your NSFAS Status Regularly
Students can check their application status on the myNSFAS student portal. They should log in using their username and password and then click on "Track Your Funding Progress."
Appeals Process Available
Students who have been rejected by NSFAS can submit a NSFAS appeal. This allows them to request a reconsideration of their application based on the reasons provided in the appeal
