NSFAS provides student loans to deserving missing-middle students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET Colleges. This funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
Allowance Payment Structure
NSFAS allowances are typically paid in 10 monthly instalments throughout the academic year, from February to November. Payments are not made outside these months. NSFAS has confirmed that allowances will be paid via approved payment channels.
Payment Methods for 2025
In late 2024, university students received allowances through their institutions, while TVET college students received direct bank deposits. For 2025, NSFAS has confirmed that this arrangement will continue for TVET college students. They will still receive direct payments into their personal bank accounts. Students are urged to ensure their banking details are up to date on the myNSFAS portal.
Allowances of students will be paid based on an approved NSFAS payment channel
The payment channel for TVET college students remains direct deposits. Colleges are advised to encourage new NSFAS-qualifying students to open bank accounts at any South African bank.
University Student Payments
While NSFAS intended to transition university students to direct bank payments, a pending court case has delayed this. Consequently, universities will continue administering allowance payments to students in 2025 until further notice.
"Students are advised to consult their institution to determine when and how they will receive their allowances," said NSFAS.
The scheme noted that institutions may have varying policies and practices regarding allowance disbursements. NSFAS pays student allowances to universities, who then distribute them to students.

Students are advised to stay informed of NSFAS updates and ensure their details on the myNSFAS portal are accurate to avoid payment delays.
