The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides crucial financial support to students in South Africa through bursaries and loans. This funding covers tuition fees and offers NSFAS allowances to help with various student expenses.

What Does NSFAS Cover for 2025?

NSFAS not only covers tuition fees but also includes registration fees, which is important for students to remember as universities and TVET Colleges begin their 2025 registration periods.

NSFAS Reminder: No Registration Fee for Qualifying Students

NSFAS urges all qualifying students not to pay any registration fees to institutions. NSFAS has said:

NSFAS reminds all qualifying students not to pay any registration fee to institutions.

Freeman Nomvalo, the NSFAS Administrator, has confirmed that students with a "provisionally funded" NSFAS status can proceed with registration once their institution opens registration. NSFAS will then confirm the funding and arrange for disbursements.

TVET College Applications for 2025

Initially, NSFAS had announced that there would be no walk-in application period for TVET College students in January 2025. However, they have since reversed this decision.

A circular released by NSFAS read:

This circular cancels the previous communication contained in Circular 9 of 2024, which stated that NSFAS will not be opening 2025 TVET walk-in applications in January 2025.

TVET College students can now apply in person, with the deadline for walk-in applications set for 24 January 2025.

By the 15 December 2024 application deadline, NSFAS reported receiving 890,599 bursary applications and 17,369 loan applications. Students who have not submitted all required documents must do so within 30 days of receiving a notice. Failure to submit the outstanding documents will result in the cancellation of their NSFAS application.

NSFAS has stressed, "We remind students who still need to submit supporting documents to do so as soon as possible to allow NSFAS to finalize their funding decisions."

NSFAS 2025 Accommodation Applications Now Open

NSFAS has launched its student accommodation portal for the 2025 academic year. Students can now apply for and secure accommodation through this system, which collaborates with accredited providers to offer safe, quality housing.

Applications for NSFAS accommodation opened on 6 January 2025 and will remain available until all NSFAS-accredited properties are fully booked. Students can apply for accommodation directly, and private accommodation providers can register their properties to offer housing to NSFAS-funded students.
