On Which Days Can I Apply For SASSA's Disability Grant?

Thursday, January 7, 2021 - 11:06Author: Raigan Cloete

Since South Africans are still living with COVID-19, SASSA had to come up with a plan as to how they would function during this pandemic. They decided that their offices would only be able to serve a certain number of people a day, which is why certain days have been set aside for Disability Grant applications.

Article Category: News

The Disability Grant is provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to help those with disabilities cover the basic costs of living. If you are interested in applying for the social grant, please note that applications take place on specific days at SASSA's offices.

Visit your nearest SASSA office to apply for the Disability Grant. Their offices will be open on Fridays to assist you with your application.

If on that day you do not feel well enough to travel, a family member or friend may apply on your behalf. All they need is a written letter by you, authorising the application.

To be eligible for the Disability Grant, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You need to be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
  • You need to reside in South Africa.
  • You need to be 18 to 59 years of age.
  • You need to submit a medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability.
  • Your medical assessment must not be older than 3 months at the date of application.
  • You and your spouse need to meet the requirements of the means test.
  • You can not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
  • You can not receive another social grant.

When you arrive at the SASSA office to apply, be sure to bring along the following:

  • Your South African identity document (ID), which must be bar-coded.
  • Your salary slip, bank statements for 3 months, or pension slips, and any other proof of income.
  • If you’re unemployed, your Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) card – "blue book" – or a discharge certificate from your previous employer.
  • Proof of your medical assessment.
  • You do not need any money to apply.

Your application will be completed at the SASSA offices. Once your application is completed, you will receive a receipt and you will need to keep it safe since it is your proof of application.

If your application is denied, you should be given the details in writing. You are welcome to request that SASSA reconsiders your application, within 90 days of receiving the outcome. If they still do not approve your application, you may appeal to the Minister of Social Development.

Matric Exam Marking Could Be Disrupted By Covid

Thursday, January 7, 2021 - 10:37Author: Sakinah Samuels

With the Department of Basic Education aiming for marking to be done in two weeks, concern has now surfaced as Covid can strike anytime and disrupt the marking processes. Marking of matric exam papers commenced on 4 January.

Article Category: News

With the Department of Basic Education aiming for marking to be done in three weeks, concern has now surfaced as Covid can strike anytime and disrupt the marking processes. Marking of matric exam papers commenced on 4 January.

In Gauteng, it was seen that 800 markers did not arrive out of it's total for a variety of reasons.

The Eastern Cape reported that  74 people arrived that were positive but that doesn't speak to the number of people that did not pitch at all.

Executive Director of Teachers' Union, National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA), said:

All the provinces have assured us that they have been able to replace those markers and that's good and well with this first batch of markers.

Concerns lie more with continuous infection as well as withdrawals which now might start happening.

"We happy with all the processes in place but of course it is the unknown factors that we have to be concerned about because we will only know about them when they actually happen," explains Manuel as he says with markers not staying on site, this then increases the possibility of coming in with an infection.

Everything is said to be on track and there are hopes that this will stay for the next couple of days.

The department even made sure to look at small details such as when markers are on breaks. DBE has said, "During meal and tea times, there would be not more than 50 persons in a particular area and meals will be provided in disposable containers so that markers can partake of their meals on the school grounds or wherever they consider to be safe."

Arrangements will also be made for health practitioners to be on site or within easy reach of the marking centres so that support and advice is available or to deal with any emergency that may arise.

Every marking centre has a Marking Centre Compliance Officer in place to ensure that there is strict adherence to the COVID-19 protocols and to also manage any COVID related situation.

Strict screening procedures are also practiced at the entrance of every marking centre and should any marking personnel display symptoms listed in the COVID-19 protocol, they will be retained in a temporary isolation room until advised by a Health Professional.

Social distancing, mask wearing, regular sanitation as well as other protocols are in place.

Marking will take place in 181 marking centres with more than 45,000 markers. They will be marking 14 million scripts in 18 days as the total number of 2020 candidates was 1 058 699.

How To Become Future Ready And Set Yourself Up For Success

When thinking about the future, it is important to consider what still needs to be done to be prepared for what the future has to offer. The future can be overwhelming, especially if you are a young adult.  In a world that is continuously changing and evolving, it is no secret that everyone has their own unique ways of learning and adapting. When students are given the opportunity to take control of their learning, the outcome becomes more positive.

Let’s face it, when students are in an educational environment they are basically told what to do and all of the things you needed were provided. This leaves students with a little sense of ownership and autonomy. Once students enter the working environment, it is one of the most exciting times. It provides you with the opportunity to take what you have learned and put it to practical use. It also provides students a sense of ownership, it will help them become more independent and empower them to make their own decisions. This will ultimately give them a glimpse of the “real world” and broaden their critical thinking, negotiation, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Here are a few tips on how to become future ready:

  1. When students enter the working environment they will face many challenges and changes that may occur in the workplace. Students need to be able to learn on their own and tailor their needs to become independent and be able to effectively make decisions.
  2. Students need to be open to learning various computer programs other than Microsoft Office programming. As the world changes, so does technology and processes. Learning how to adapt to new software programs and tools will be useful when entering into a job market that has an array of software programs.
  3. Being an effective communicator is one of the most important skills to possess as it is a skill that has served people throughout the ages. We are living in a modernised society where communication takes place over technology rather than face-to-face. Therefore, it is important to communicate efficiently and clearly so that the receiver at the end of the line understands the message that you are trying to convey.
  4. Another important skill that students can bring into the workplace is adding value to an employer, client or company. There are many ways in which students can add value through finding creative ways to become valuable to a business. For example, providing an efficient, fast and quality customer service.
  5. Students must be able to think on their feet by being creative and adapting to various processes of the company. This way, students will also be able to develop their skills and be efficient in making decisions when they are faced with a challenge.
  6. Networking is important in today's digitally driven world. Through networking, students are able to connect with people from different industries and gain insights and ideas from people. This way you can expand your network through exchanging information, knowledge and broaden your perspective of the corporate environment.

So there you have it, tips to bear in mind about how to take control of your future. It is important to learn accountability at a young age as it has a huge impact on your career and life choices. This will help you grow as an individual and become successful in the near future.

What Is The Role And Main Function Of SARS?

Thursday, January 7, 2021 - 10:15Author: Terrique Alie

The South African Revenue Services (SARS) is one of the largest tax collecting agencies in South Africa. It is by law to collect revenue from South African citizens and ensure that they comply with the tax law. Their main aim is to ensure that they enhance the economy and social development that will benefit all citizens.

Article Category: General

What are the main functions of SARS?

  • To collect and administer all taxes and levies
  • Facilitate trade
  • Advise the minister of finance with all tax and revenue information
  • Ensures compliance with tax and customs regulations
  • Protect the economy against any illegal importation and exportation of goods
  • Provide a quality service to the public

In South Africa there are many different types of taxes that citizens are required to pay. Without receiving revenue from tax, the government will not be able to fulfill the needs of the economy. The revenue received from tax is to help sustain the social and economic needs and provide public goods and services to society.

Here are a list of few taxes that citizens are required to pay:

  • Capital gains
  • Estate duty
  • Income tax
  • Pay as you earn (PAYE)
  • Skills development levy (SDL)
  • Transfer duty
  • Unemployment insurance fund (UIF)
  • Value added tax (VAT)

Who is liable to pay tax?

South Africa works on a residency-based taxation system. This means that South African citizens are taxed on worldwide income and non-residents are only taxed on locally sourced income.  Any individual that is liable for income tax must register as a taxpayer at SARS. It is by law that you must register as a taxpayer if you are a Director of a company or a member of a close corporation, receiving an income more than R60 000, a sole proprietor and PAYE deducted from your earnings.

For more information on tax, you can contact the toll free number on 0800 00 7277 or visit their website on www.sars.gov.za/

Thursday, January 7, 2021 - 10:09Author: Sakinah Samuels

Should you have been funded by NSFAS when it was in the form of a loan scheme and you're now looking to repay your loan, here are the ways in which you can do so. NSFAS provides funding for higher education studies to South African students.

Article Category: News

Should you have been funded by NSFAS when it was in the form of a loan scheme and you're now looking to repay your loan, here are the ways in which you can do so.

All students who received a NSFAS loan before the president’s announcement of free education in December 2017 need to repay the loaned amount as per the signed loan agreement form. Should you have started funding with NSFAS in 2018 and thereafter, you have received a bursary and there's no need for you to pay NSFAS back.

You will only start repaying your loan once you have a salary of  R30 000 or more per year. No need to worry as the repayments are worked out at a rate that will not place a great burden on you and is based on your salary.

40% of a general loan is converted into a bursary if you pass all of the courses you were registered for in that year.

If you applied at your institution's Financial Aid Office to be on the NSFAS Final-Year Programme, you will have your final-year loans converted into a 100% bursary if you pass all of your final-year courses and qualify to graduate.

Ways To Pay Debit Order

If you don't want to worry about remembering to pay your NSFAS loan every month, this is a good option for you. Just complete the electronic debit order form and submit it. To find the NSFAS debit form, click here. Complete this form and email it back to [email protected].

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)

If you would like to do an EFT each month these are the NSFAS bank details.

  • Name of Account: NSFAS
  • Branch Code: 210554
  • Bank: First National Bank
  • Account Number: 500 600 28203
  • Please use your ID Number (6711165000000) as a reference when making payments

Should you bank with Standard Bank, Capitec, FNB or Absa, NSFAS is added as a predefined beneficiary and you can then just  look for “NSFAS” in their list of beneficiaries.

Salary Deduction

Your employer can make deductions from your income and pay it over to NSFAS. Print and complete the form and submit to your employer.

NSFAS provides funding for higher education studies to South African students.

A freelancer is an individual that is self-employed and undertakes various contractual projects for different companies. Freelancers are not committed to a company long-term. They are also known as contractors because they are only used by a company to complete a particular project or task over a short period of time.  Freelancers are responsible for various aspects such as setting their work hours, keeping track of time spent on different projects, billing clients and paying their own taxes.

Today, being a freelancer comes with many benefits as it offers companies a great deal of flexibility. Freelancers have a great sense of control over the amount of workload, the clients they work alongside and their potential income earnings. Depending on a freelancer's level of expertise, they can determine what projects they want to undertake and the payment rate per project or task completed. It takes a lot of courage to decide whether to pursue freelancing as a full-time career or as a part-time job for extra income. Freelancing requires good money management and constant sourcing of new clients.

What are a few of the common freelancing career fields?

Your website needs to communicate what your service offerings are and how it will benefit clients. If you are unable to do so, communicate with your clients as early as possible to avoid inconveniences. As a freelancer, it is important to protect your reputation at all costs.

So there you have it, finding a freelance job does not have to be hard. With the right skills, attitude and business approach you can take on any project that comes your way.
