Fulbright Foreign Student Program 2021-2022

Bursary Details: 

The South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program provides grants to South African university graduates who wish to pursue their post-graduate studies at any university in the United States. This program is open to any subject that students wish to study, excluding MBA studies which require students to make contact with patients. 

This program allows South African PhD students (who are enrolled in a South African University) to apply to conduct one year’s research at a university in the United States as a Visiting Student Researcher. The program also offers Post-graduate students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship which will enable them to pursue their Master's or Doctorate degrees. Scholarships are only awarded for two years towards one degree.

Candidate Requirements: 

  • Be a South African citizen OR a permanent resident with a minimum of 5 years of permanent residency status in South Africa (Please note: S.A. nationals with dual citizenship from the U.S. are not eligible for the program)
  • You Must be registered for a PhD with a South African university (if you are applying to be a Visiting Student Researcher)
  • You must have a four-year bachelor’s degree, or a three-year bachelor’s degree plus honors year, or a four-year B-Tech degree if you are applying for Master’s
  • Have a Master’s degree if you are applying for a Doctoral degree
  • Excellent academic record
  • Required scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for each specific field of study
  • Clear study goals
  • Leadership qualities
  • Interest in extracurricular activities
  • Display interpersonal skills & cultural sensitivity

Bursary Inclusion: 

If your degree is fully funded, the scholarship will cover:

Fully funded awards generally cover the following, but can vary according to each grantee’s program:

  • Travel allowance and transportation from South Africa to the authorized U.S. destination
  • Health benefits
  • Settling in allowance upon arrival in the U.S.
  • Monthly maintenance allowance (to cover living expenses)
  • Tuition and fees
  • Book and computer allowance
  • J-1 visa sponsorship

Supply the following supporting documents:

  • Your transcript/s
  • Your graduation certificate/s (including an explanation sheet on the grading system used by your university. This is usually found at the back of your transcripts) 
  • Ensure that your transcripts, certificates and explanation sheet are scanned into one file before you upload them to the application system. If you are uploading pdf files, use the following file naming protocol: Surname_Firstname_Document type (e.g. Smith_Susan_Transcript BSc)
  • Provide a study plan & a study research/objective for the degree that you are applying for
  • Personal statement - Promote your accomplishments
  • Three reference letters
  • If you are applying for a PhD program, upload a writing sample of 10- 14 pages
  • CV
