MHSC Bursaries In Mine Seismology

A critical shortage of qualified seismologists within the South African Mining Industry (SAMI) and the country as a whole has been identified.

It is considered to be one of the main challenges in addressing the recent regression in mine safety due to an increase in injuries caused by rockbursts (i.e. falls-of-ground related to mining-induced seismicity).

The Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) seeks to attract qualified candidates interested in pursuing a career in Mine Seismology.

BSc Honours (Geophysics) with a concentration in Mine Seismology

The only BSc Hons course that provides training in Mine Seismology and leads to registration with the South African Council for Natural Science Professions (SACNASP) is offered by the University of the Witwatersrand, situated in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The BSc Hons (Geophysics) degree prepares graduates for careers in mineral, oil and gas exploration, mining, groundwater and environmental geoscience.

The 120-credit course comprises the following topics:

  1. Mathematical and Computational Geophysics (16 credits);
  2. Global Geophysics (16 credits);
  3. Advanced Potential Theory (16 credits);
  4. Seismology (16 credits);
  5. Electrical and Electromagnetic Methods (16 credits);
  6. Research Project (30 credits); Field School (10 credits)

Students concentrating on mine seismology will undertake a Research Project that addresses a relevant topic.

Participation in the Field School will be replaced by a secondment to an organisation where they will receive practical experience in Mine Seismology.

Any student that does not have a credit in Geology is also required to complete a first year course in the subject.
