Funding for UNISA students

The University of South Africa (UNISA) distance learning university which UNISA offers a combination of career-orientated courses, which one would normally associate with a university of technology and general academic programmes which you woulfd find at a traditional university. UNISA offers certificates, degrees and diplomas and offers at bachelor, master and doctorate level. 

Here are the funding options for UNISA students:

OER (Open Educational Resources) Funding: The OER is usually funded through foundations. To read more about OER, click here

Unisa Merit Bursary: In order to be approved for this bursary, you need to have obtained an average of at least 75% and above in your previous year of study. This bursary covers tuition fees and prescribed textbooks only.

Transport Education Training Authority bursaries: Annually, the Transport Education Training Authority awards bursaries to students in studies that are aligned to specific and insufficient skills that have been identified within the transport sector.

Unisa honours bursary: This bursary can only be awarded to South African citizens who are registered for an honours qualification (it can be in any discipline). The bursary covers tuition fees only.

BANKSETA Lesedi Bursary Scheme for Unisa CTA Level 2: If you are a UNISA student who has been accpeted to study CTA (Level 2), you can apply for BANKSETA Lesedi Bursary Scheme.

Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) Funding: The ISFAP is a government initiative that aims to provide financial assistance to struggling and the “missing middle" students. You can read about ISFAP here

Department of Labour Bursaries: If you are a student with a disability, you can apply for a bursary from the Department of Labour. To apply for these bursaries, you should apply directly at the Department. 

Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme: A bursary from Funza Lushaka are applicable to students who are studying a teaching qualification since teaching is seen to be an area of national priority. You can read about the Funza Lushaka bursary here

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS): NSFAS offers free higher education and training for working class South Africans if their household income is no more than to R350,000 household per year. NSFAS bursaries includes tuition fees, transport allowances, personal/living allowances and learning materials allowances. To find out how to apply for NSFAS funding, you can read here.

The scholarship will be awarded to women students who are pursuing a degree in the Faculty of Humanities at UCT. Applicants will need to demonstrate evidence of leadership in social justice and social activism.
