As a NSFAS qualifying returning student, do I have to pay a registration/upfront fee to the university?

An arrangement has been made with universities to allow students to register. The registration/upfront fee will be covered by your NSFAS package.

After the Fees Must Fall protests, the qualifying limit for funding was changed and so now students who come from a household with an income of less than R350 000 per annum will be able to get full payment for their university or college expenses as well as other costs such as a personal care allowance or accommodation. You can apply for NSFAS online and do not need to visit the office in person to do so. Bursaries are available for public universities, universities of technology or TVET colleges.

I am a continuing student at a university and have applied to NSFAS for the first time in 2020. Will I be considered for financial aid for the 2020 academic year even though I am not a first time entrant (meaning first year student)?

Yes, you will be considered for financial aid funding, provided you meet the pre2018 NSFAS’s academic and financial eligibility requirements. You can apply for NSFAS funding at any point during your degree if your household income is less than R350 000 per annum.
