The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides students with financial support to study at a public university or TVET College. The bursary covers the cost of registration, tuition and allowances for transport, learning materials and living expenses.
In order to qualify for the bursary, students need to meet the academic requirements of the bursary and their chosen tertiary institution. Students are also required to meet the bursary criteria to be eligible for funding.
Students may apply for the NSFAS bursary via an application centre or online through the NSFAS website.

When students apply for the bursary, they will need to prepare the following documents:
- All applicants must provide a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
- Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
- Smart ID cards: A copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
- Proof of income: Applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
- Persons with disabilities need to complete Disability Annexure A form.
