How Long will NSFAS fund me?

NSFAS, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, funds students for their studies from money they receieve from the government. If you are funded by NSFAS, not only will your studies but also further funding for other expenses.

With regards to how long NSFAS funds their students, it depends on the duration of your course or degree. Most degrees take about 3 to 4 years, whereas medical degrees for example take up to 7 years. And if you fail one year, NSFAS has granted students an extra year of funding.

Can Foreign Students Apply for NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government run bursary scheme for students, which receives its funding budget from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and also reports to the DHET. NSFAS provides bursaries to students who meet their requirements and are studying at public universities or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

Will NSFAS Fund Me If I Get Sassa Money?

Sassa

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government entity that falls under the Department of Higher Education and Training.

NSFAS offers financial aid to students who cannot afford to pay for their studies at Universities and TVET colleges.

The NSFAS requirements states that those who experience financial constraints which does not allow them to fund their own studies, such as those people who are SASSA recipients qualify for funding from NSFAS.

This is because it indicates that financial assistance is needed.

Ways to Repay your NSFAS Loans

In December 2017, the President announced that NSFAS will offer bursaries as a form of free education rather than loans that need to be paid back. Students who received a NSFAS loan before the president's address need to repay the loaned amount as per the agreement form that was signed. If you only started being funded by NSFAS in 2018, there is no need to pay back any money as you received a bursary.

How Will I Know if NSFAS Approved my Application?

If you've applied to NSFAS and are getting nervous about whether you have been approved, you might be wondering how you will know if you've been approved.

NSFAS has said:

Application results will be communicated to all applicants once NSFAS received confirmation from the institution that an academic offer has been made to you.

When NSFAS has finished with the the decision process, they will let the successful applicants know their status through an SMS, an email and through your myNSFAS account.
