Does NSFAS Still Provide Book Vouchers?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides funding for students at higher education institutions. So does NSFAS still provide book vouchers now that students are using online learning? 


In the past NSFAS has provided book vouchers as part of their funding so that students are able to purchase any books related to their course of study. But now that many universitites are using online learning, will NSFAS still provide book vouchers? 


What is the NSFAS N+2 Rule?

NSFAS N+2 Rule

The rule that NSFAS applies for the length that they fund students is called the N+2 rule. Keep reading to find out what the rule is! 


The rule means that students have N+2 years to finish the degree they have applied for. N refers to the minimum number of years allocated by the institution to complete the qualification a student is registered for. The +2 refers to an additional 2 years that NSFAS includes for the number of years they will fund a student. 


How much Must Your Parents Earn to Qualify for NSFAS?

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers bursaries to South African students who plan to study at public universities and TVET colleges. They cover funding for registration, tuition and allowances.


So how much must your parents earn in order for you to qualify for funding? NSFAS has stated that your combined household income should be under R350 000 per year for you to qualify. If you are a person living with a disability, your combined annual household income should be less than R600 000.

Will NSFAS Fund Me if I Fail?

If you are a NSFAS funded student who has failed a course or if you're going to be a NSFAS student, you may be wondering if NSFAS will fund you if you fail? 


The answer is yes they will continue funding you. 

According to the NSFAS policy agreement students must pass at least 50% of their modules as well as meet the academic requirements of their institution in order to continue receiving financial aid during the course of their study period.

The Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is offering a scholarship for PhD graduates. This scholarship will be awarded in collaboration with the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre).

Through this scholarship programme, ten PhD grants will be offered to candidates studying in the following fields:

You have the chance to study in Ireland! The Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme is aimed at offering fully-funded scholarship opportunities to South African students. Selected students will be chosen to study at Master’s level in Ireland’s Higher Education Institutions.

Students from Historically Disadvantaged Institutions are encouraged to apply.

Matric learners are invitied to take part in the The University of Free State star of stars competition. 

Learners who are top academic achievers and residing in the Free State province will be considered. Applicants must have applied to study at the UFS before the closing date in order to enter the Star of Stars competition.
