Formally known as Mangosuthu Technikon, in November 2007 the institution was renamed Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT). Despite this name change, MUT has been operating since 1979 and currently boasts a student population of around 13,000.
Located on the outskirts of Durban, MUT aims to provide students with career-orientated education by providing them with theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the workplace.
While the cost of courses offered at MUT is in line with other universities of technology, it could be unaffordable for many South African students. Students at the university can apply for the following bursaries.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) provides bursaries to deserving students from poor and working-class backgrounds. Nsfas bursaries are comprehensive and will pay a student’s tuition and accommodation fees. Students will also receive transport, stationery and personal care allowances.
South African Bulk Terminals Bursary
Bursaries will be awarded for all fields of study, to current and prospective students. The students must be enrolled or intending to study as full-time students in 2023 at a recognised South African tertiary institution.
Preference will be given to applicants residing and studying in Durban and accordance with the Company’s Employment Equity and Business Operational requirements. Students who are awarded the bursary must be available for on-site work experience if required.
Feenix Graduate Bursary programme
While Feenix is known as a crowdfunding platform, bursaries are available for students who have completed their undergraduate degrees in the Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology and Finance faculties in 2020 or 2021 with historical debt for the Feenix bursary
Sasol Bursary
The Sasol Bursary is awarded to students enrolled in undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering and Mining engineering.
Sugar Industry Trust Fund For Education
The Sugar Industry Trust Fund For Education (SITFE) bursary is available to students who fall within the missing middle (household income between R350,000 and R600,000) and students from the sugarcane-growing provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga
The SITFE bursary is available to students enrolled in Science, Engineering and Agriculture courses.
Children of sugarcane farm workers can apply for the bursary for any field of study.
