Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are an excellent option for students wanting to qualify for vocational professions.
Students at TVET colleges receive education and training which relates to a specific range of jobs, employment or entrepreneurial possibilities. Once these students have graduated, they go on to become skilled plumbers, engineers, electricians, marketers and hospitality professionals.
Are There TVET College Bursaries Available In South Africa?
The name ‘TVET’ indicates that the institution is subsidised by the South African government. This also means that students may qualify for the country’s most popular bursary scheme.
Students who choose to attend TVET colleges may qualify for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) bursary. This is provided they meet the qualifying criteria set out by Nsfas for TVET college students.
A Nsfas bursary provides allowances to qualifying students to cover their living expenses which include, meal and transport expenses.
It's important to note that not all students attending TVET colleges automatically qualify for Nsfas. The bursary scheme only funds certain courses and academic programmes.

Students must also meet the Nsfas bursary requirements to qualify for funding.
These qualifying criteria include:
having a household income is less than R350,000 per annum for able-bodied students or R600,000 for disabled students, not enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded and being registered or intending to register on a PLP, NC(V) or Report 191 programme at any of South Africa’s 50 public TVET Colleges in South Africa.
