The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has revealed the requirements for teaching assistant roles for phase 5 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI).
Phase 5 of the BEEI programme targets individuals between the ages of 18 and 34, turning 35 by the end of March 2026, to assist and support teaching and learning.
Requirements For Teaching Assistant Jobs
There are several different teaching assistant positions available during phase 5. Here are their requirements.
- Curriculum Assistants: Need at least 40% in the subject they'll support. A teaching qualification is advantageous.
- Reading Champions: Must have passed the school's Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) at the Matric level and show a passion for reading. A language teaching qualification is an added benefit.
- E-Cadres/ ICT Assistants: Require a pass in IT at Matric level OR an IT qualification OR an IT certificate. A Diploma or Certificate in IT is an advantage.
- CSAs: Need a Matric pass and a passion for caring for learners. A Child and Youth Care Worker certificate is an added advantage.
- Handypersons: Should have an interest in infrastructure-related jobs. A trade certificate is an advantage.
- Sports and Enrichment Assistants (SEA): Should have an interest in sports or enrichment programmes like music. Relevant certificates are advantageous.
- Laboratory Assistant: Requires a Matric certificate with Science subjects. A Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Science, Mathematics, or Technology is an added advantage.
- Workshop Assistant: Needs a Matric certificate with Engineering Subjects (preferably from a technical school). An Artisan qualification or a Bachelor's/Diploma in Engineering is an advantage.
The government's teaching assistant programme created more than one million work opportunities for unemployed youth in South Africa during its previous phases. The fifth phase of the programme will see the creation of more than 200,000 jobs.
Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applications will close on 9 May 2025. This gives youth a short period of time to apply for teaching assistant jobs.
