Statisticians are responsible for collecting, processing and analysing quantitative data in order to make informed decisions. Statisticians produce reliable data, analysing the data to form a clear meaning and thereafter compiling practical conclusions from the data.

Statistics and Statistical Science Bursaries 

NSFAS Bursary

The NSFAS bursary is provided by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and is a government bursary. It covers any undergraduate degree in any field as long as it's done at a public university or TVET College.

Other requirements for NSFAS funding include:

  • Household income must come to R350 000 or less per annum
  • If you are a student living with a disability, your household income must come to R600 000 or less per annum
  • You must a South African citizen
  • You must be applying to or registered at a public institution
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding

City of Cape Town Bursary

The City of Cape Town is part of the Western Cape government of South Africa, and is responsible for providing its residents with a number of basic services.

The City of Cape Town is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme. Bursaries will be awarded to students who reside within the Cape Metropolitan Area/ Cape Town, for studies within these scarce skills fields.

Some of these fields include:

  • Data Science/ Analytics (Statistics, Computer Science)
  • Auditing
  • Economics
  • Information Systems and Technology
  • Accounting (CA and Cost Management)
  • Project Management
  • Urban Design, Landscape, Planning, Surveyors and Architecture

Eligibility requirements include:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must reside within the Cape Metropolitan Area/ Cape Town
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  • You must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards a qualification within one of the scarce skills areas listed above
  • You must be studying or registered to study at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa (University, University of Technology or TVET College)
  • You must be in financial need
  • You must NOT be in receipt of any other bursary awards or financial assistance (including NSFAS)

FirstRand Foundation Trust Bursary 

The FirstRand Foundation Trust is inviting students to apply for their Undergraduate Bursary Programme. Bursaries will be awarded for studies towards critical skills programmes, specifically for Undergraduate Degree studies in specific fields.

One of these fields is Science:

  • Statistics
  • Data Science
  • Mathematical Science
  • Actuarial Science
  • Bioscience
  • Physics
  • Agricultural Science
  • Climate Science
  • Renewable Energy

Eligibility requirements include:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be non-white (African, Coloured, Indian, Asian)
  • You must NOT be older than 21 years in your first year of study
  • You must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric within the last 3 years (applicants who completed Matric more than 3 years ago may NOT apply)
  • You must have achieved a minimum of level 5 for Mathematics in Matric
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must intend on studying full time, towards an undergraduate degree in one of the fields listed above
  • You must have applied for and been provisionally admitted to study at a public university in South Africa, in 2024
  • You must belong to the “missing middle” group, with a combined gross family income of between R350 000 and R600 000 per annum

Clicks Foundation Bursary 

The Clicks Foundation is inviting students to apply for their bursary programmes. The Clicks Foundation has 2 bursaries available, for undergraduate studies, within the following fields:

  • You must be registered for your 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study
  • You must be studying at a recognised university in South Africa
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70%
  • You must NOT currently be in receipt of any other bursary awards
  • Preference will be given to students from designated groups and students living with disabilities

ABSA Bursary

Absa Bank Limited (Absa) is one of South Africa's major banks, offering a range of business corporate, retail, investment and personal banking, including wealth and investment management and credit cards.

Absa is inviting students to apply for bursary funding. Bursaries will be awarded for Bachelors Degree studies in the following fields:

  • You must be studying at a recognised and accredited public tertiary institution in South Africa
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in your most recent examinations
  • You must be in financial need
