Media studies is a discipline and field of study that deals with the content, history, and effects of various media, with a particular focus on the mass media. 

Media and Communications refer to the way media (including print, film, TV and digital media) has an influence on the people of society. Media has a big impact on society, the general opinion of the public and often acts as a way to hold public figures and entities accountable. 

To start a career in media and communications, you could get a tertiary qualification in public relations, communications, journalism, or film and television.

With these qualifications, you could get a career within media studies such as a digital manager, media planner, social media manager, television production coordinator, web content creator, arts administrator, editorial assistant, marketing researcher, writer, photographer, and more.

Absa Fellowship/Scholarship Programme 

The Absa Fellowship/Scholarship will provide cover undergraduate degree studies within the fields of: Creative Arts, Digital or Data Design, Engineering, Humanities (Social Sciences), Mathematics, Science and Technology. In relation to media studies, the fields covered include: 

  • Media Studies
  • Digital Arts
  • Drama and Film Studies
  • Film and Media Production
  • Film and Television
  • Digital Media
  • Media and Writing
  • Multi Media
  • Multimedia (Digital) Design

The eligibility requirements are as follows: 

  1. Must be a citizen and permanent resident in South Africa (or any of these countries: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia)
  2. Must be between 18 and 25 years old
  3. Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
  4. Must have received a minimum overall average of 65% in Matric or an equivalent qualifications from a TVET college
  5. Must be studying or intend on studying full time, towards an undergraduate degree in one of the aforementioned fields of study
  6. Must have receive provisional or full acceptance from one of these Universities in South Africa: University of Cape Town, University of Stellenbosch, University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria or University of KwaZulu-Natal (other institutes are NOT covered)
  7. Must be entering your first year of study

Revolution Media Academy Bursary 

Revolution Media Academy (RMA) is a daughter company of the Revolution Media Group, founded in 2011. The aim of RMA is to provide education within the Music, Media and IT sectors to previously disadvantaged students, while simultaneously addressing the backlog of educational training.

Eligibility requirements of this bursary include: 

  1. Must be a South African citizen
  2. Must have achieved a minimum “B” symbol for Matric English and Mathematics in matric
  3. Must have strong academic potential
  4. Must provide proof of a financial need
  5. Must be studying or intend on studying at the Revolution Media Academy (not applicable for other institutions)

Canon Collins Education Journalism Scholarship

The Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Mail and Guardian, is inviting students to apply for the Education Journalism Scholarship. The scholarship covers Masters in Journalism, Communications or Media studies.

For this bursary, the eligibility requirements are:

  1. You must be a South African national
  2. You must reside in South Africa
  3. You must have completed an Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) OR you must be graduating by the end of 2021
  4. You must be studying for a 2 year course or applying for a 1 year full-time Masters course in any of these fields: Journalism, Communication or Media Studies
  5. You must be studying or applying for studies at a university in South Africa
  6. You must be willing and able to partake in a 12-month paid internship in 2023 – at the Mail and Guardian as an Education Reporter
  7. You must be committed to social justice in Southern Africa
  8. You must intend on promoting positive social change, especially in the area of Education
  9. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate commitment to education matters in South Africa (by way of work experience, volunteering or as an activist) 

Boston Media House and YFM Scholarship

Boston Media House was formed with the goal of providing the best opportunity for students to study and qualify for a career in the media and design industry. YFM is a youth-focused radio station in Johannesburg, Gauteng, with the Y in its name meaning “Youth”.

Boston Media House and YFM are inviting students to apply for 2 types of scholarships for studies at Boston Media House in Sandton.

Students can choose to apply for either of the following scholarships (also known as “Awards of Excellence”):

  1. Scholarship 1: Diploma in Media Practices at Boston Media House (3 Years full-time)
  2. Scholarship 2: Soul Candi digital composition and production (short course)

Eligibility requirements include: 

  1. You must have completed Matric in 2021
  2. You must be interested in studying towards a Media or Music qualification
  3. You must intend on studying at Boston Media House, in Sandton, in 2022
  4. You must have a strong academic record
  5. You must NOT be a director of Yired (Pty) Ltd, Boston Media House, an employee at YFM, Boston Media House and/or their agencies, and not an immediate family member
