AlanAlan Hammond is the CEO of Portal Publishing. Alan co-founded Portal Publishing with his mother Sylvia Hammond in 2003, with the launch of the Skills Portal website.  Before that Alan was an independent HR and skills development consultant. 

Alan learned about online publishing while working for the iafrica.com online publishing company from 1996 to 2002.  He started as an entertainment industry writer and rose to the rank of Managing Editor.  In his spare time Alan is a mountain biking enthusiast and a regular participant in his local parkrun.

Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela has reported back to parliament on the achievements of NSFAS over the last 12 months. 

Sassa beneficiaries were waiting to hear whether the SRD Grant would be continued, increased, or converted into something else.  The national Budget speech should have given the country answers but in an unprecedented move the Finance Minister's Budget speech has been cancelled for today.

 

The SRD Grant continues to be very popular and the government has had to find an additional R2,7 billion to make payments for this grant. This will mean that beneficiaries will continue to receive their monthly R370 grant payments.

It's been R350 a month for 3 years but now the SRD grant is finally going to be increased, like other Sassa grants have increased.  The Minister of Finance has finally announced what the grant will be increased to from the 1st April 2024.

The Minister for Higher Education has announced a major new government funding scheme which will support students in the missing middle who previously didn't qualify for NSFAS bursaries. The funding will be available from this year for first year and also current students.
