The SRD Grant was introduced during Covid-19 to help those who didn't have any means of income during the national lockdown. Once the pandemic faded it was found that there was still a need for the financial assistance that the grant provided.
However the R350 per month was not increased. Other Sassa grants like the Older Persons grant and the Child Support Grant have increased. Speaking to parliament on the 13th of March 2024, Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that there would be a complete review of the social security platform released soon by the Minister responsible.
However in the meantime the SRD grant would be increased by about 5% to R370 per month from the 1st of April 2024.
The President had already stated that the SRD Grant would remain, and in fact be improved going forward. As well as this modest increase in value we can expect more changes in the SRD Grant in the future.
There is a lot of speculation that the SRD Grant will be converted to a Basic Income Grant in the future.
