Pursuing tertiary education does not come cheap, and many students hoping to attend a university or college, often seek financial aid from various sources. 

The most-common and most popular route is through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), but not every student will be eligible to receive funding or simply won't be successful with their application.

Luckily, there is more than one option for you to consider, such as scholarships and bursaries offered by banks. These banks include Standard Bank, Capitec, ABSA and First National Bank (FNB). 

Here is all the information you need to know about student funding from FNB. 

FNB is one of South Africa's four major banks, and has a Graduate Experience Programme on offer for students looking for tertiary education funding. 

The FNB Fund Bursary is administered by Study Trust, which is an educational public benefit organisation that connects learners with study opportunities, providing bursaries and scholarships for tertiary education, as well mentoring and support. 

Through FNB and Study Trust, partial bursaries are awarded to those studying in the undergraduate fields of Commerce, Engineering and Science, and majoring in specific areas. Some of these areas are:

The partial bursary will cover 50% of a student's total study fees per annum. Students will be required to fund the other half of their fees via another method. 

Applicants must meet the stipulated criteria before applying for the bursary. Eligibility requirements of this bursary include: 

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must have strong academic potential.
  • Currently be in matric or have completed matric within the past two years (students who completed matric more than two years may not apply).
  • Studying or intend on studying full-time within one of the above-mentioned undergraduate fields of study.
  • Business Science/BCom students must have achieved the minimum results of 60% for English, Mathematics and Physical Science during their matric exams (June or finals).
  • Science students (BSc) must have achieved the minimum results of 60% for English, Mathematics and Physical Science during their matric exams (June or finals).
  • Engineering students must have achieved the minimum results of  60% for English, Mathematics and Physical Science during their matric exams (June or finals) during their matric exams (June or finals).
  • Accounting students pursuing their Honours qualifications may apply.
  • Students with disabilities are welcome to apply.
  • Proven need for financial aid.
  • Preference will be given to female students as well as those residing in rural communities and who are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
