While the release of the bursary scheme's funding list has brought good news for some applicants, those awaiting the outcome of their appeals have been left in suspense.
The scheme, which provides financial assistance, acknowledged the concerns of the cohort of applicants who had their initial applications rejected and subsequently reached out to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) regarding their appeal status.
In response, NSFAS assured them that their appeals are currently being reassessed and that the outcomes are not yet final.
Appeals are being reassessed, and some statuses are not final and subject to change
The scheme advised applicants to continue monitoring the portal for updates. If the rejected status changes, there is a possibility of being funded. However, if the rejected status remains, it implies that the applicant will not receive funding.
NSFAS typically rejects bursary applications due to applicants not meeting the required funding criteria. Students who have exceeded N+2 or N+3 are unable to appeal their unsuccessful applications.
Under the current N+1 rule, students are given N+1 years to complete their degree. "N" represents the minimum number of years allocated to complete a qualification, while "+1" refers to the additional year a student may need to finish their studies.
However, whether an appeal is possible or not depends on certain conditions. Applicants are usually given a 30-day period to appeal the rejection status after receiving a decision from NSFAS.
Listed below are the reasons NSFAS will consider if you appeal:
- Failure to meet academic performance requirements
- Change in financial circumstances
- Loss of bursary sponsor
- Incorrect academic results were submitted which led to the non-renewal of funding
NSFAS also highlighted that a significant number of students who had lodged appeals had not submitted all the required supporting documents. They urged students to actively assist in the appeals process by submitting the correct documents when requested to do so.
NSFAS also called on tertiary institutions to play their part in ensuring that students submit the necessary supporting documents for their appeals.
Students are encouraged to stay informed through the myNSFAS portal and promptly respond to any requests for additional documentation.
