Undergraduate students are almost guaranteed NSFAS funding, so long as they manage to meet the necessary eligibility requirements. However, when it comes to postgraduate studies, NSFAS requirements become a bit more complicated.
NSFAS used to offer funding to postgraduate students, but only for selected courses. Now, however, the bursary scheme has done away with all funding towards postgraduate studies.
Students will not be funded for any Postgraduate diplomas, Honours degrees, Master's degrees and PhD degrees. However, Postgraduate students should not fret, as there are other funding options available for them.
These funding options include:
National Research Foundation (NRF)
The NRF provides a selection of bursary, grant and scholarship types to postgraduate students that can prove their financial need. Their bursaries function to aid students working specifically in the areas of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
The NRF places an emphasis on supporting research efforts in South Africa.
Funza Lushaka
The Funza Lushaka bursary covers funding for students studying teaching and education. Not only do they fund Bachelor of Education degrees, but they also Postgraduate Certificates in Education (PGCEs).
