The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) is a DHET bursary and is likely the first option to consider.
To submit a Nsfas bursary application if you are a student at the University of South Africa (Unisa), you should follow these steps:
- Visit the Unisa website and navigate to the "Student Funding" page.
- Click on the "Nsfas" link to access the online application form.
- Complete the online application form by providing all the required information, including your personal details, financial information, and supporting documents.
- Submit the online application form by clicking on the "Submit" button.
- Wait for a confirmation email or SMS from Unisa and Nsfas indicating that your application has been received and is being processed.
- Keep track of the status of your application by logging into your Nsfas student portal. If your application is successful, you will receive a bursary award message from Nsfas and Unisa.
You must meet the requirements listed below to qualify for Nsfas student funding as a prospective student at UNISA.
- If you are a prospective student who applied for admission to the 2023 academic year for a first undergraduate qualification.
- If you are a returning student who took a gap year during the previous academic, who has an incomplete undergraduate qualification and who has not exceeded the N+ rule.
- If you are NSFAS-approved returning and new students from the prior academic year who did not study during the 2021 academic year.
- And if you are a student funded by other Nsfas bursaries who wishes to switch to the Nsfas DHET grant.
If your Nsfas application is provisionally approved, you do not need to pay the minimum registration fee. Your registration will be automatically activated based on the Nsfas funding confirmation received by Unisa.
However, If your Nsfas application is rejected, you may appeal during the prescribed appeal application period only. New applicants must appeal directly with Nsfas.

Unisa also gives no guarantee that the bursary will be granted to all eligible students, as the bursary is subject to the availability of funds.
