Many hopeful applicants have been waiting for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to give them the go ahead to apply for 2022 funding. However, things have been a bit different this year.

Applications for 2022 funding are not yet open, and NSFAS has given no indication as to when they will be open.

Instead, the financial aid scheme has taken to social media to remind applicants that application dates have not yet been announced.

"Reminder that Application dates for the 2022 academic year have not been announced. We advise prospective applicants to monitor our website and social media pages for official updates regarding the opening of applications."

In previous years, NSFAS applications would open in September each year, but this cycle was broken in 2020 when the financial aid scheme decided to open applications in August.

Over a million applications were received during this application period, as the Covid-19 pandemic saw more people qualifying to receive funding.

"The number of students assessed as eligible for the 2021 programme cycle is 1 286 867, with the total allocated for the university sector being 939 934 students and 346 933 students for the TVET Colleges. These include new and continuing students." NSFAS said in its 2021 funding report.

These numbers could increase once the application cycle for 2022 opens. Applicants hoping to find out application dates have been encouraged to check the NSFAS website for updates.
