University students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will receive their June 2025 allowances directly through their institutions, following last year's shift away from the NSFAS Bank Account system.

This payment method was introduced after the funding body paused plans to deposit allowances into students’ personal bank accounts. That system remains suspended due to an unresolved court case.

Student allowances will be paid through an approved NSFAS payment channel.

NSFAS confirmed that allowance amounts for university students remain in place for June 2025. Payments form part of the 10 monthly disbursements issued from February to November each academic year.

The scheme provides comprehensive support to eligible students enrolled at universities and TVET colleges. This includes tuition, registration fees, and allowances for food, accommodation, and study materials.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) wants to cede its Close-Out project for several academic years to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to combat widespread financial mismanagement. This strategic move aims to streamline efforts to recover billions of rands and ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
