The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has revealed that they are still processing appeal applications submitted by unsuccessful students. This comes months after the 2023 bursary application period concluded.
NSFAS applications for the 2023 academic year closed on 31 January 2023. Following the conclusion of the application period, NSFAS informed students whether or not their bursary applications were successful or not.
Unsuccessful applicants were given 30 days to submit an appeal application upon receiving the outcome of their initial application. Many students did this, however, they still do not know the outcome of their appeal application.
Why NSFAS Appeal Applications Are Delayed
NSFAS revealed that a significant number of students who submitted appeal applications did not provide the required documentation needed for an appeal application. These documents are critical, as they help substantiate the students' appeal application.
We have also noted a significant number of students with appeals that do not have the relevant supporting documents.
The financial aid scheme is calling on students to ensure they upload the correct documents needed for NSFAS appeals. The documents needed for a NSFAS appeal will differ depending on the reason a student's initial bursary application was unsuccessful.
We urge students to please assist the process of appeals by submitting the correct documents when requesting to do so.
Students are also required to submit the relevant propensity letter.

NSFAS revealed that a student's status may change if their application is reassessed. Their status can change at any time.
Please note that statuses are being reassessed that is why they are changing around.
Students whose appeal applications are successful will receive comprehensive funding from NSFAS. Being funded by NSFAS means your tuition and registration fees are fully paid.
Students will also receive several allowances including an accommodation allowance, learning material allowances and a living allowance.
