The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) caters for individuals that plan to pursue their studies through public universities or Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges.
The bursary scheme's application system has been open since 28 September 2022. Recently, Nsfas confirmed that it received over 230 000 applications for the 2023 academic year.
In a statement, the government bursary scheme said:
Currently, 52508 Sassa beneficiaries have already received the outcome of their 2023 funding applications.
According to the Nsfas, the application system provides real-time funding decisions for South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant beneficiaries. Nsfas does not only fund Sassa grant beneficiaries but also individuals that fall in one of the following categories:
- Have a combined household income of not more than R350 000 per year.
- Persons with disabilities combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per year.
- Students who started studying before 2018 must not have a household income of more than R122 000 per year.
As part of the online application, applicants will be required to submit a copy of the Identification Document (ID) for the student and parents, a payslip (of both parents), if parents earn an income, and a consent form to give the scheme permission to verify income. The Nsfas funding application system continues to be open until 31 January 2023.
