NSFAS funds both TVET College and South African university students who are in need of financial aid. However, do they require college students to reapply for NSFAS if they plan to study at a university?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced that TVET college students funded by NSFAS who hope to study at a South African university in the next academic year are required to reapply for funding.

NSFAS is a bursary provided by the government to assist students who hope to study at TVET colleges or public universities, however, do not have the financial means to do so.

Applications are currently open to those hoping to apply for funding for the 2022 academic year.

The bursary covers the registration fees, tuition, transport costs, living allowances and book or learning material allowances.

The following are eligible for funding from NSFAS:

  • South African citizens.
  • Sassa grant beneficiaries.
  • Applicants with a combined household income of R350 000 per annum or less.
  • Persons with disabilities whose combined household income is no more than R600 000 per annum.
  • Applicants who first registered at university before 2018 whose household income is no more than R122 000 per annum.

Students may apply for funding online or through NSFAS application centres. Those who have access to the internet are advised to apply online, however, those applications who do not have internet access may seek help from application centres.

These application centres are situated throughout the country and their employees are willing to assist anyone who may need help applying for the bursary.

NSFAS aims to provide students with funding for the entire duration of their studies as long as they meet the academic requirements and pass their modules or subjects.

The majority of degrees or courses require three to four years of study, with exception of medical degrees which may take up to seven years.

Students are reminded that NSFAS will grant them an extra year of funding in the event that they fail one year.

NSFAS applications close on 7 January 2022.

Please do not wait until the last minute to apply as this may result in you waiting longer to receive a reply about the status of your application.
