The University of South Africa (Unisa) has confirmed its NSFAS allowance payment plan for the first half of 2025. Following this announcement, many students are eager to know how much they will receive.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This funding covers tuition and registration fees and several allowances are paid to students for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
Estimated NSFAS Allowances for Unisa Students
Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nobuhle Nkabane, has confirmed a 4% increase in NSFAS allowances for 2025. While NSFAS has yet to release the official figures, the estimated allowances based on this increase are:

Learning Materials Allowance: R5,408 per year (previously R5,200).

Learning Materials & Personal Care Allowance: R6,240 per year (previously R6,000).

Incidental/Personal Care Allowance: R3,016 per year (previously R2,900).
These figures are projections, and students should await an official NSFAS statement for confirmation.
NSFAS Payment Schedule
NSFAS allowances are disbursed in 10 payments over the academic year, typically from February to November.
How Will Unisa NSFAS Allowances Be Paid?
Unisa has confirmed that NSFAS allowances will be disbursed via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) directly into students’ bank accounts. This remains the standard payment method for university students receiving NSFAS funding.
