The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides bursaries which enable deserving students from poor and working-class backgrounds to obtain a tertiary education qualification.

NSFAS received more than 900,000 bursary applications for the 2023 academic year. At least 300,000 students were rejected from receiving funding in 2023.

Rejected NSFAS applicants were encouraged to submit an appeal application to the financial aid scheme if they felt NSFAS was incorrect to reject their funding application.

Some students were rejected from receiving funding, as their registration at a tertiary institution was not finalised. These students' registration was then finalised but now their funding status indicates that their funding is under review.

What Happens To Students Who Are Still Under Review?

NSFAS explained that If your funding is under review, it assumes you have made an appeal.

The Independent Appeals Tribunal started working in March 2023 and students can expect to receive communication from the tribunal during April 2023.

Nsfas bursaries are awarded to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and public universities.

Students must meet the eligibility criteria set out by the bursary scheme. If they are approved for funding, they will begin receiving their allowances when the NSFAS receives confirmation of their registration at a tertiary institution.
