Pursuing tertiary studies in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is often an advisable career path due to its strong skills demand as well as its role in addressing societal problems.
Consequently, several private companies go out of their way to incentivise the growth of the labour market in this field by providing bursaries. Some of them include those that are listed below:
Jones & Wagener
Jones & Wagener offers a limited number of bursaries for South African BEng/BSc Civil Engineering, Geology, Geochemistry, and Environmental students studying at South African Universities. The bursaries are awarded based on academic merit, financial need, and company-specific considerations.
The applicants who achieved less than 75% in both Maths and Physical Science are unfortunately not considered. The students who receive these bursaries may be required to do six weeks of paid vacation work at Jones & Wagener's offices.
After completing their studies, bursary students are also be required to work for Jones & Wagener for a period equal to the period for which the bursary was held.
Sappi Bursary Scheme
Sappi offers bursaries for talented and innovative young South African citizens who wish to study full-time at any South African accredited university.
The fields of study include Engineering, Forestry and Wood Science, Pulp and Paper, and Forestry. The bursary period is open from 01 April to 30 September, and the recruitment cycle takes place between October and November every year.
Candidates must have South African citizenship and meet the academic requirements, with preference given to learners with an average of 75% and above in Mathematics and Physical Science. Applications must be completed online.
Sasol Mainstream Bursary Programme
The Sasol Bursary program provides financial and developmental support throughout the study period for full-time university studies in engineering and science. Upon completion, students may be employed within the Sasol Group through their Graduate Development Programmes.
The bursaries cover registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, and other expenses. They accept applications for degrees in various engineering and science fields and also provide support for postgraduate studies.
To apply, candidates must be South African citizens and registered or qualify for possible registration at an approved South African university or university of technology.
Royal Bafokeng Institute Bursary
The Royal Bafokeng Institute Technical and Vocational Education and Training Bursary aims to address South Africa's skills shortage with a focus on mining and engineering. The bursary supports academically deserving individuals who cannot afford to study at TVET colleges in Brits, Mankwe, and Rustenburg campuses.
Supported qualifications are in boiler making, fitting and turning, electrical engineering, civil engineering, rock engineering, mining manager, blasting ticket, mining overseer, mechanical engineering, and quality management.
Applicants must be South African citizens and have proven financial need. The bursary covers tuition, study materials, and living expenses.
Applicants must submit their CV, certified ID, a letter from Kgosana, latest academic results, proof of family income/affidavit, and proof of acceptance at a TVET college within the specified application deadline.
The institute then screens bursary applications and provides feedback within five days.
