The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) receives over a million applications annually, and a key part of this process involves submitting the required documents. An application is incomplete without uploading the necessary supporting documentation requested by NSFAS.
NSFAS may ask applicants to submit specific documents during the application process. According to NSFAS, "Based on the application type, the system will generate a list of required documents for upload."
Documents Required for NSFAS Applications
Here are the documents that NSFAS may require from applicants:
- Copy of the applicant's ID
- Copy of parents’ or guardians’ IDs
- Proof of income
- Disability Annexure Form (for students with disabilities, along with a medical report)
- NSFAS 2025 Consent Form (grants NSFAS permission to verify the information provided by the applicant and their parent/guardian/spouse against independent third-party sources)
- NSFAS Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration Form (for applicants under 18 who are orphans or vulnerable due to exposure to abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, or substance abuse)
- NSFAS Declaration Form (for applicants aged 34 or younger, used to verify parental/guardian details)
- Retrenchment letter
- Death certificate(s)
- Divorce decree
- Proof of legal guardianship
- Marriage certificate
- Additional documents may be required for appeals
NSFAS has explicitly stated that affidavits are not accepted as part of any application process:
