In 2022, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) opened its online applications system with improvements. In recent years, students have encountered systematic issues and fortunately, things have turned around with the current system.
This system has been made much more simplified and developed to be more user friendly, also similar to other platforms that prospective applicants are accustomed to, such as WhatsApp and through USSD to make it easier for students to get updates.

Students who applied for bursaries can now use three different platforms to view the status of their 2023 funding applications.
As applications recently closed, students will have the option of using the newly released WhatsApp number line or USSD code and also by logging into their myNsfas account to track their status or submit an appeal.
When it comes to WhatsApp, students will need to save the WhatsApp number: 078 519 8006 on their phones and start tracking their application status. Whilst students may also dial the Nsfas USSD code: *120*67327 to perform the same function.
A number of processes had to be observed to make sure that these communication platforms are released to the public after they have been tested for any faults or teething issues.
As Nzimande had shared that Nsfas system will continue to improve, a new payment method to disburse allowances has also been introduced to help address delayed allowance disbursement-related issues.
