When you have had an unsuccessful NSFAS application, you are allowed to appeal. You will notice once you have appealed the status of your NSFAS application, your NSFAS status will change to 'active appeal' so keep reading to find out what it means.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers funding to people who would like to study at a university or a TVET college but do not have the funds to do so.

NSFAS applicants who have had unsuccessful applications are allowed to appeal if they feel that they have the correct motivations to support their appeal.

If you have been tracking your NSFAS appeal status and it says 'active appeal', it means that you have been provisionally approved for funding and that your funding is pending final approval.

NSFAS applicants are required to submit their appeal within 30 days after their application has been declined.

The myNSFAS portal requires applicants to choose between these 4 reasons :

  1. Change of Income
  2. I am a vulnerable child
  3. I am independent of my biological parents
  4.  The cost of education is restricted to one parent

The applicant will need to download, complete, upload and submit the relevant official required supporting documents in order to support the reason they have chosen.

NSFAS has also stated that only applicants who have been declined for the reasons listed below will be able to access the appeal their application on myNSFAS,

  • Financial Ineligibility,
  • Academic Eligibility Criteria (pass/fail)
  • N+ rule (if they are still within N+2)
  • New applicants who have provided insufficient documents or information can also appeal.

For those unfamiliar with how to track your NSFAS appeal status, you can do so by following the steps listed below:

  • Login to the myNSFAS portal here
