Submitting a Nsfas funding application to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme is an ideal way to secure financial assistance for your studies. However, that is only the initial part of the process because you will have to track your application’s progress.

Applications for a bursary from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) closed on 31 January 2023 with funding decisions being released from 6 February 2023.

This means prioritising the progress of your application is just as important, and this is how you can go about doing so.

  1. Login to your NSFAS account on the myNSFAS portal
  2. Enter your username and password and sign in
  3. Click on ‘Track Funding Progress’
  4. After you click on the 'Track Funding Progress' option, you will receive one of several application statuses.

You will then see one of two Nsfas statuses, 'Application Approved' or 'Application unsuccessful'.

If you see an 'Application Approved' Nsfas status, this means that your Nsfas application has been processed and when checking, Nsfas found that you are provisionally approved for funding according to the Nsfas funding criteria.

Once your institution you are registered at submits your registration data to NSFAS, payment will then be processed to cover you and your studies.

If the bursary scheme has not approved your application, your status will be denoted as  ‘Application unsuccessful’. This means that according to the funding criteria, you do not meet one or more of its funding eligibility requirements.

You will then know if Nsfas needs to take any extra steps to approve or reject your funding application or if the programme needs any more supporting documents or information to complete and process your application.

However, the bursary scheme encourages applicants to appeal if they believe that their application being unsuccessful is unfair, with the closing deadline for appeals is on Monday 20 February 2023.
