The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) 2023 application period is now open. Students enrolled in courses at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges can apply for funding for the 2023 academic year.
Nsfas provides bursaries to students from poor and working-class households. If a student's Nsfas application is approved, their tuition fees will be paid in full. Recipients of the bursary will also receive meal, textbook and transport allowances.
Students will first need to create a myNsfas account to apply for Nsfas funding in 2023. The myNsfas portal is also used by the scheme to provide students with the status of their Nsfas 2023 applications and inform them on matters related to their funding.
Here's How To Check The Status Of Your Nsfas 2023 Application
- Login to your Nsfas account on the myNSFAS student portal here
- Enter your username and password and sign in
- Click on ‘Track Funding Progress’
When an applicant clicks on the Track Funding Progress option they could receive one of several application statuses. These application statutes inform the student of the progress of their funding applications and whether or not they need to take additional steps to secure funding.
Here’s What Your Nsfas Application Status Means
- Application Submitted - Nsfas has successfully received your application.
- Filtering - Nsfas’ application system is checking if you are a new applicant or a returning student
- Validation - Nsfas is conducting third-party verification checks to confirm the data you provided in your application. These include validating your information on the Home Affairs database and with the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa)
- Funding Eligibility - Nsfas is verifying your household financial status that was declared in your application
- Awaiting Academic Results/Admission - Nsfas is checking your academic results and your institution admission status to ensure that you are eligible for funding. This application status could take a while to change as Nsfas has to wait on your institution to provide them with the required information.
- Awaiting Registration - Nsfas is receiving data from your institution to enable them to create a bursary agreement
- Signing Agreement - You are required to sign a bursary agreement
- Payments - Your allowances have been processed.
Application results are communicated to applicants when Nsfas receives confirmation from the institution that an academic offer has been made to the student.
This will be communicated to you before the start of the academic year via SMS, email and through your myNSFAS account.
