The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a bursary provided by the government, which funds students from low-income families who would like to study at public tertiary institutions.
All applicants are verified for funding and the information provided upon application is checked.
NSFAS does have the right to stop funding a student if they no longer meet the requirements for the bursary.
The bursary has established guidelines that detail the terms and conditions which students need to follow.
These are the guidelines that students should meet to qualify for funding:
- When applying to NSFAS, the correct information should be provided.
- Students need to meet the minimum requirements to study at a tertiary institution.
- Applicants need to be South African citizens or permanent residents.
- Students need to pass at least 50% of their modules in a given academic year.
- Students also need to meet the minimum requirements of their institution in terms of academic performance.
Students should take note of the N+ Rule which states that each student is funded one extra year if they fail a course in a given academic year.
Failing to meet the above-mentioned standards will result in students losing funding from NSFAS.
