In a move welcomed by students across South Africa, Minister Nobuhle Nkabane of the Department of Higher Education has announced significant increases to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances for the 2025 academic year. This crucial financial support plays a vital role in ensuring student livelihoods and access to education.

Minister Nkabane announced:

We have considered the cost of living which is very high as well as some of the socio-economic challenges that our people are facing every day so we have decided, working closely with USAf and NSFAS as well as student formations to adjust student allowances for this financial year to 4%.

NSFAS 2025 Allowance Increases

  • TVET College Students: A substantial 46% increase in annual allowances, rising from R10,000 to R14,600. This increase will be paid directly into the students bank accounts in 2025.
  • NSFAS Funding for 2025: NSFAS has provisionally funded approximately 800,000 students for the 2025 financial year. Once registration data is confirmed, funding will be finalized, and payments will commence.
  • University Students: University student allowances will be paid directly through their Universities in 2025.

"We are responding and we are deliberating our approach to respond to their needs," the Minister explained.

NSFAS Allowances For 2025

NSFAS provides various allowances to support students' living and academic needs. Here's a breakdown:

  • Accommodation Allowance:
    • For students living away from home.
    • Capped amounts vary for university and TVET students, and between metro and non-metro areas.
    • Students may not recieve both accommodation and travel allowances.
    • Students living in institution owned, leased, or private accredited accomodation, all recieve capped amounts.
    • Health sciences students recieve 12 months of accomodation coverage.
  • Living Allowance:
    • For NSFAS-funded university students in non-catered residences.
    • Covers food and essential expenses.
    • Excludes distance students with fewer than 60 credits.
  • Travel Allowance:
    • For students living with immediate family or relatives.
    • Provided instead of the accommodation allowance.
  • Learning Materials Allowance:
    • Provided to all university students annually.
    • Covers academic books, materials, and learning devices.
    • Amount based on the cost of prescribed learning materials.

NSFAS Administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, emphasized the importance of this announcement, stating, "This creates certainty, allowing institutions to load registration data. We need this data to finalize funding decisions."

The increased NSFAS allowances for 2025 are designed to alleviate financial burdens and ensure students can focus on their studies. By streamlining the payment process, NSFAS aims to provide timely and efficient support.
