The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) opened applications for 2025 funding on 21 September, with a deadline of 15 December. A total of 890 599 bursary applications and 17 369 loan applications were received.
NSFAS funding provides crucial support to South African students, covering not only tuition fees but also essential allowances.
The financial aid scheme has however reminded students that their application outcome will only be available after all necessary documents have been submitted and verified.
While students wait to hear back from NSFAS, it's encouraged that they continue to monitor the myNSFAS portal to check their NSFAS application status.
How to Check Your NSFAS Application Status
- Login to your myNSFAS Student Portal: This is your main access point on the official NSFAS website.
- Enter your Username and Password: Click "SIGN IN!"
- Track Your Funding Progress: Locate and click on this option.
"Provisionally Funded" NSFAS Status
If you see "Provisionally Funded" on your status, it means your application has been approved. However, NSFAS is still awaiting registration confirmation from your institution.
Once you register for the academic year, your funding will be confirmed.
What to Do If Your NSFAS Application Was Rejected
If your application was rejected, you can submit an appeal. This allows you to request NSFAS to reconsider your application based on the reasons you provide.
How to Submit an NSFAS Appeal
- Login to your myNSFAS Account.
- Track Funding Progress: Check the application progress tabs.
- Submit an Appeal: If your status shows "Unsuccessful," click on the "Submit Appeal Tab."
- Review the Reason for Rejection: Carefully examine the reason for your unsuccessful application.
- Choose an Appeal Reason: Select the most relevant reason from the available options.
- Upload Supporting Documents: Upload certified copies of any supporting documents that strengthen your appeal.
- Submit Your Appeal: Click "Submit Appeal."
You can monitor the progress of your appeal within your myNSFAS account. NSFAS aims to respond to appeals within 30 days.
