The Department of Higher Education (DHET) has finally announced the official opening date for the 2025 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications. Minister Nobuhle Nkabane also shared important updates on the enhancements made to the NSFAS systems to improve efficiency and accessibility.
The feedback received has already informed critical systems changes to simplify the online application process and also making it accessible to all.
NSFAS 2025 Application Opening
Nkabane revealed that the online applications for NSFAS 2025 will commence on 20 September. This much-anticipated announcement comes after a delay to ensure the systems are fully functional and ready to handle the influx of applications.
I am therefore inviting all students who are seating for their matriculation this year to take this opportunity and apply for either the NSFAS bursary or loan. This invitation is also extended to learners from grade 9, 10, and 11, who would like to enter the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector.
The Minister acknowledged the numerous complaints and challenges faced by students in previous years. She attributed these issues primarily to the delays in releasing matric results, which often led to delays in funding decisions.

New NSFAS Board
Following the dissolution of the previous NSFAS Board in April due to the findings of the Werksmans Attorneys report, the Minister announced the establishment of a new board on 1 August. The department is currently in the process of selecting qualified individuals with a minimum requirement of a Master's degree to serve on this crucial body.
Decentralization and Office Expansion
NSFAS is taking steps to improve accessibility and responsiveness by decentralizing its operations. The plan includes opening new offices in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal, while the Cape Town office will be closed.
We are hoping that moving forward, the systems are going to be up and ready, including governance systems.
Additionally, the organization is considering establishing satellite offices in other provinces to better serve students nationwide.
