The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced important updates on how students will receive their allowances in July 2024 and beyond. This information is crucial for all students who rely on NSFAS funding to cover their educational expenses.

Understanding NSFAS Support

NSFAS provides comprehensive financial aid to deserving students through bursaries, loans, and allowances covering living expenses, learning materials, and accommodation.  This financial aid is only provided to students enrolled in approved courses at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa.

New Allowance Payment Methods for July 2024

  • University Students: Following discussions with universities, NSFAS will continue to authorize universities to distribute allowances, including those for July 2024.

  • TVET College Students: Starting in May 2024, NSFAS will directly deposit allowances into students' bank accounts. Important: All TVET college students must have a bank account set up to receive these payments.

Farewell to the Black NSFAS Card

Previously, students uploaded their banking information on the myNSFAS portal for allowance payments. Students who received notifications regarding failed bank verification should update their details immediately on the portal.

These new NSFAS allowance payment arrangements signify the end of the prior NSFAS Direct payment system, rendering the black NSFAS card obsolete. NSFAS has confirmed the termination of service provider contracts associated with the old system.

TVET Students: Uploading Bank Details on myNSFAS

Here's how TVET students can update their bank details on the myNSFAS portal:

  1. Visit the myNSFAS portal.
  2. Log in using your myNSFAS credentials.
  3. Under "Profile Information," select "Bank Account Details."
  4. Enter your chosen bank's details.
  5. Click "Save."

Direct Payments to Landlords for Accommodation

NSFAS is committed to streamlining accommodation allowance payments by sending them directly to private landlords. Landlords can submit claims to a dedicated email address: NSFASAccomProv [at] nsfas.org.za (NSFASAccomProv[at]nsfas[dot]org[dot]za). The next batch of payments is scheduled for release by 18 June 2024, aiming to clear all valid claims and offer financial relief to landlords. NSFAS urges landlords to refrain from evicting students solely due to pending allowance payments.
