NSFAS offers bursaries and loans to eligible students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. These cover tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

NSFAS allowances are distributed in ten monthly payments throughout the academic year, which typically runs from February to November. Students therefore receive their allowances only during these months.

How University NSFAS Allowance Payments for May 2025 Will Be Made

In the second half of 2024, NSFAS announced it would discontinue the use of the NSFAS Bank Account. The scheme planned to pay allowances directly into students’ personal bank accounts via an approved payment channel.

Allowances of students will be paid based on an approved NSFAS payment channel.

However, due to an ongoing court case, the direct payment system has not yet been implemented. As a result, universities will continue to pay allowances directly to students in May 2025.
