The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a vital lifeline for many South African students seeking higher education. While NSFAS provides financial aid to deserving students, not all applications are approved.
Why Was My NSFAS Application Rejected?
NSFAS uses data from SARS and credit bureaus to verify household income. Common reasons for rejection include:
- Exceeding Income Threshold: If your household income exceeds R350,000 (or R600,000 for students with disabilities), your appeal is likely to be denied.
- Inaccurate Income Declaration: Misrepresenting your income or providing inconsistent information can lead to rejection.
- Ineligible Qualifications: NSFAS does not fund certain qualifications.
- Gap Year Students: If you were previously denied due to academic ineligibility, you cannot appeal.
- Incorrect Registration: If your institution hasn't submitted or submitted incorrect registration information, contact your institution directly.
- N+Rule Exceedance: Exceeding the maximum number of years allowed for a specific qualification.
If your NSFAS application was declined, you can submit an appeal within 30 days of receiving the decision.
How to Appeal Your NSFAS Rejection
- Go to myNSFAS
- Log into your myNSFAS account.
- Click the 'Track Funding Progress' option.
- Check the application progress tabs.
- If your application status reflects an unsuccessful message, you may submit an appeal by clicking on the 'Submit Appeal Tab'.
- Once you are on the 'Application Appeal' page, you can see the reason for your unsuccessful application status.
- You are then able to choose the appeal reason.
- Upload certified supporting documents to support your reason.
- Click 'Submit Appeal'.
If an applicant is successful in their NSFAS appeal application, they will receive comprehensive funding. NSFAS bursaries cover tuition and accommodation fees. Students will also receive a transport allowance, meal allowance and a book allowance.
