The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has outlined the process for disbursing allowances to TVET college students in 2025, including the first batch of payments scheduled for May.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to qualifying individuals pursuing approved programmes at South African universities and TVET colleges. This funding covers tuition and registration costs, along with allowances for meals, learning materials, and accommodation.
How Allowances Will Be Paid to TVET College Students in May 2025
NSFAS confirmed that it will continue to transfer allowances directly into students’ bank accounts. This direct payment system, introduced in 2024 after the discontinuation of third-party payment service providers, remains in effect for 2025.
“The channel for paying allowances to TVET students will remain direct deposits into their personal bank accounts,” said NSFAS.
This method is intended to reduce delays and missed payments, while also proving more cost-effective for NSFAS.
What Students Need to Do to Receive Their Allowances
Only students with approved NSFAS funding who have submitted their registration details to the scheme will be eligible to enter banking details on the myNSFAS portal.
Therefore, students are encouraged to finalise their registration for the 2025 academic year as soon as possible, as colleges are responsible for submitting registration records to NSFAS.
How to Upload Bank Details on the myNSFAS Portal
Eligible students can upload or update their bank account information by following these steps:
- Go to the myNSFAS portal
- Log in with your myNSFAS credentials
- Navigate to the "Profile Information" section and select "Bank Account Details"
- Enter accurate banking information
- Click "Save" to complete the process
NSFAS emphasised the importance of keeping personal details up to date and submitting banking information on time to avoid delays in receiving allowances.
The scheme also advised that new students should open bank accounts at any recognised South African financial institution in order to receive their payments without issue.
“TVET colleges must actively encourage newly funded NSFAS students to open bank accounts,” NSFAS added.
