The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced the allowance amounts for October 2024.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
This financial support includes coverage for tuition, registration fees, and various allowances for essentials such as food, accommodation, and learning materials.
The government bursary scheme has detailed the TVET College allowance amounts for October 2024.
NSFAS Allowances for TVET Colleges
TVET college students receive an annual living allowance of R10,000. The learning materials allowance for TVET college students depends on the specific courses they are registered for.
Students with disabilities receive additional support, including higher living allowances and an extra allowance for learning materials.
Certain conditions apply, such as allowances being available only during simulated training for some TVET students.
Monthly NSFAS Allowances for October 2024
NSFAS divides meal and personal care allowances into 10 monthly payments. In October 2024, students will receive a meal allowance of R1,345. Students living in catered accommodation will also receive a personal care allowance of around R300.
Transportation Allowance
Students residing more than 10 km from campus are eligible for an annual transportation allowance of R7,718, which translates to a monthly travel allowance of R771. If the institution hasn’t arranged travel, this allowance will be paid directly to the student.
To continue receiving NSFAS funding, students must maintain their academic eligibility. Be sure to meet all requirements to keep these benefits.
TVET College Students Must Submit Banking Details to Receive NSFAS Allowances
NSFAS has urged TVET College students to upload their banking details on the myNSFAS portal to ensure timely allowance payments.
Approximately 11,000 students have yet to submit their banking information on the portal, which may delay their payments. NSFAS is working to ensure that all students’ banking details are verified and available.
Only students with confirmed funding and submitted registration data are able to add their banking details to the myNSFAS portal. NSFAS has verified all submitted bank accounts.
